Chapter Eighteen

Sloane

Growing up in Crystal Creek was a mixture of good and bad. When I look back on my teen years, I know I had a stable home and a good upbringing, but there was always something missing. Something I couldn’t name.

When my dad died, the void only became greater, a huge hole crumbling at the edges, its sides collapsing in.

I remember the day we lost him all too well. But whenever the memories begin to surface, I wish I could erase them. I don’t want that to be part of my story. I just want to remember the good times, the way when I was little he held my hand on the way to the store on a Sunday morning to get pastries, the sound of his singing drifting along the hall from the shower, the way he loved my mom and showed me how good men could truly be.

Since coming back to this town, I haven’t let myself acknowledge how hard it was after he passed away. Mom and I have barely mentioned him, and I know it’s the elephant in the room. We can’t avoid it forever.

He had good friends, an adoring family, and a whole life ahead of him. For a tragic accident to take him so early was more than unfair, it was downright brutal. I’ve missed out on a huge part of life by not having him around, but I finally feel more healed and ready for the future. Time away has given me a good perspective, and now I’m back to hopefully spend time with my mom, I know it can only get better from here.

When I get home, I step inside and hear her humming in the kitchen. I wander through and smile at her as she turns to see me standing in the doorway.

“Ahhh, you’re home!” she beams as she pulls a glass from the cabinet and sets it down on the counter. “How was your first day?”

“You know what…” I begin as I saunter in and sit on one of the stools at the island. “I had a really great day. It was fun.”

“I’m glad,” she smiles. “You’ve always done better when you’ve had something to focus on.”

“Yep,” I agree. “Although I’m not sure how long term I could make it. Not that I’m not grateful to Jane for helping me out. But I think mentally soon I may need more of a challenge.”

“Hey, it’s always easier to find a job when you’ve got a job,” she smiles. “I’m proud of you Sloane, you’ve barely been back five minutes but you’re already carving out a new life for yourself here.”

“I am,” I say as I lean forward and watch as she pours herself some lemonade. “And actually, it’s
